We here at Target Worm Counts want to take today to appreciate our hooved friends on National Help a Horse Day. Not a day of the year goes by where animal welfare isn't of the utmost importance to us, but it's great to use these days of national recognition to highlight how we could all improve our relationship with animals and the natural world.

There are numerous governing bodies and charities devoted to rescuing, caring for, and re-homing horses (and other equine companions). I could write for hours about the good work these groups do, but there aren't enough words to describe the effort and man-power that goes into it. However, it is important to educate ourselves on the options available when we are witness to animal abuse and neglect.

British Horse Society

As the UK's largest equestrian charity, the British Horse Society are committed to the protection of horses and the promotion of their welfare. They also offer qualifications and instruction on caring for horses, so whether your an owner, rider, or all-round enthusiast then BHS is available to advise on the health, safety, and care of your horses. You can follow this link for more information on their website.

World Horse Welfare

This international body has campaigned for 90 years to stop the suffering of horses. They have a hands-on approach, backed with scientific research, to improve the lives of horses across the world. In the UK, their Field Officers investigate reports of horse abuse and aim to resolve these issues. They also offer advice to owners with questions about the welfare of their horses.

For more information on World Horse Welfare you can visit their website here.

Redwings

Although their headquarters is based in Norfolk, Redwings is a nationally operating charity providing sanctuary for 1500 horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules. They also offer a re-homing programme, placing horses in Guardian Homes across the UK. Redwings is a not-for-profit organisation, and rely on donations to improve the lives of horses, so take a look at their website to find out a little bit more.

If you are aware of any animal abuse, please report it to the relevant body, and take any necessary steps needed to improve the situation.
